Garmin Connect an Error Occurred With Your Upload
Over the concluding few days, Garmin made three fitness related software announcements:
A) They (finally) enabled you to combine activity tracker data from multiple devices into one cohesive movie
B) They enabled Strava Beacon support through Garmin Connect Mobile
C) They took a swipe at Fitbit by enabling you to migrate off Fitbit and onto Garmin
The first combo-dish one I pigeon into in a split post already today, and the second i I'1000 less interested in. I talked about Strava Beacon here, and this essentially allows you to accept your Garmin device trigger the Strava Beacon service (*see my 5-second thoughts on this at the finish of this mail service). Whereas the balance of this post is all virtually the Fitbit to Garmin migration piece.
Speaking of which, the service is really named:Fit a Bit.
Trolling level is high in these parts. Nearly like when Garmin trolled Apple tree during their Apple Sentinel announcement.
(As to why I take ii posts on Garmin updates today instead of ane, it'southward simply because I broke them apart when I had to await while Garmin fixed some issues I was having.)
Testing information technology out:
Now in order to exam this, I wanted a completely clean slate. So I created a new random account on Garmin Connect. Totally virgin, not a single step walked or nighttime slept (with anyone).
Now Garmin doesn't exactly get in obvious as to where to become. In fact, even the press release doesn't have a link or annihilation on how to set this up. I would accept thought the very kickoff affair Garmin Connect would have asked upon creation of a new business relationship is "Exercise you lot take any previous activity tracker information to import?". But it doesn't.
Instead, you take to know to click on the bosom on the left side, which then shows you an 'Import Information' option.
Side by side y'all're given the option to import either specific activeness/workout files, in GPX/FIT/TCX format, or Fitbit scale and activity data. In the case of the workout files, those three file types cover basically anybody/everything out there. Whereas the Fitbit body data is specific to the formatting that Fitbit has created.
Garmin helpfully links to Fitbit'southward own back up page on how to export your information. For footstep information, you can exercise it all in ane giant shot. Whereas for workout data, you've gotta do information technology one by one (which sucks…every…single…activity). To be clear, that's Fitbit'south issue for not just having a behemothic 'Download everything' pick.
On the Fitbit site, you'll go nether Settings and so Data Consign:
Now the actually important part here is another limitation that Fitbit has on exporting out data, which is express to 31 days at a time. So, I but did basically the last month'south worth, since I've been wearing the new Fitbit Charge 2 during that time flow.
I and so checked all the boxes on the right side. Mostly because when in dubiousness, just choose everything. Information technology serves me well when at the ice cream sundae bar, then I figured it works fine here too.
A few seconds afterwards I got the file to download:
I decided to take a peek at the file, since I was curious how much data could be moved over. Looking start at steps, information technology's pretty articulate cut. It merely saves totals per day, only also inclusive of things like floors and minutes sedentary.
Weight measurements are in there besides, merely I didn't step on the Fitbit scale during this fourth dimension period. Still, Fitbit just puts in the last known value for each day.
Sleep is there as well, again, pretty simplistic. No wake-up/fall comatose times, just totals for each nighttime.
Finally, there's nutrient logged for each day. Only since I don't log food, these are all zeros.
What you'll notice is that none of the workouts are in here. Rather, information technology's just action data. As I noted earlier, you have to practise the workouts individually, i painful one at a time.
Then, back to Garmin's site I went, and dragged my piddling 10KB information file into the box doohickey:
It'll then confirm the type of units I was using on the Fitbit site/data:
About i.2 seconds after, it completes (with zippo fanfare), and shows as such on the page:
With the assumption of success in the air, I went to cheque out my dashboard and pigeon into steps. I figured that'd be the easiest one. Yet…null:
I double-checked my Fitbit file, and indeed, it showed plenty of steps on those dates. And then and so I looked at sleep. Also, nothing. Same for weight too (which has values in the file).
Then I decided to requite it some time. Later on all, at that place was a massive amount of data imported – some 10KB in total. That'south like 5 Blu-ray DVD's worth, right?
I shot off an electronic mail to some people I know, and then went for a run. And so 24 hours later they (Garmin) fixed something magical behind the scenes and it started working.
To double-check the data imported correctly, I started by picking a random day – November 1st it was. And so looked at both the Fitbit data (on the right), and the Garmin Connect data (on the left).
![]()
Looking through them, it correctly copied:
Steps: 7,129
Floors: ii (apparently I was lazy that day)
Altitude: 3.46 miles (which Garmin converts to 3.5mi)
However, calories was quite different.
Fitbit: 2,821
Garmin: 1,220
So I decided to do some digging and encounter why. I went back to the Fitbit CSV file and checked out the calorie section for that solar day:
And immediately you come across why. Garmin is (incorrectly) parsing Activity Calories instead of Calories burned. Or peradventure they're doing it on purpose. Either way, I remember information technology'due south a (minor) fault. Garmin unremarkably includes your BMR calories within their calorie calculations, thus using just activity calories would make less sense than total calories burned.
As you saw above, the floors climbed was correctly reported on an individual day – and then also shown in the various report totals:
Anyhow, onto sleep. At that place was no sleep. No, I mean, I was sleeping, merely none of information technology was imported in. I checked iv-5 different days, all testify null (no) values.
Last only not to the lowest degree, weight. It did correctly pull over the values Fitbit had in the files. I didn't weigh myself during this fourth dimension period, but Fitbit records the last known weight automatically for each day in the export files. All of which shows upward correctly on Garmin Connect.
And then there you have it – a quick overview of how Garmin converts stuff from Fitbit.
Wrap-Upward:
While this functionality may seem minor – I doubtable it's actually the showtime for not simply Garmin, but other companies also. These types of migration tools are incredibly common in other software industries, enabling consumers (and corporations) to quickly move between platforms.
Now, the import tool is as yous can see, pretty basic. Ideally information technology'd exist wrapped in a bit of a sorcerer and would leverage some sort of automation to grab the data for you (perhaps fifty-fifty available API'due south). And of grade, equally you can see there'due south still some bugs to exist worked out. Just I'd bet a penny the calorie one (along with sleep) will likely exist fixed in curt order (probably measured in hours).
That said, information technology'due south leaps and bounds better than the competitors. Namely because the competitors take nothing. Kinda similar winning your age group at a race…simply beingness the only competitor in your age grouping. Still, any of us would take a gratis medal whatsoever twenty-four hour period. And in this case, information portability is a great medal to have.

*Strava/Garmin Beacon Hook-Up: Honestly, I don't get information technology. I'm non sure why I'd want to have Garmin trigger Strava Beacon (which requires paid Strava Premium), when Garmin'south own Live Tracking service is complimentary. Farther, yous'd at present accept to have both Strava and Garmin Connect Mobile apps open up on your phone for this to piece of work. I'm sure this is useful to someone, only I'one thousand not that someone. Information technology would probably be useful if Strava hooked upwardly with Polar, Fitbit, or Suunto for this, since they lack their own live tracking platforms. Just since Garmin now has an exclusive on this for a while with Strava, that won't happen. Thus…shrug.
